The Story

Complete Organ Works Volume 1

After autographs and First Editions. Editer: Peter Hauschild Notes on interpretation: Gerhard Weinberger

Carl Philipp Emanuel's organ sonatas are still overshadowed by the "overpowering" father. Forkel wrote, for example, almost apologetically: "These organ solos are made for a princess who couldn't play a pedal and no difficulties, regardless of whether she had a beautiful organ made with two pianos and a pedal and liked to play on it." Since the princess is meant Anna Amalia v. Prussia, but not just a manualiter positive, but rather a large organ with a pedal built, Forkel's often cited anecdotal note will have to be viewed with a certain skepticism: is it perhaps the attempt by the artist, who is artistically quite fixated on JS Bach, for that to find an excuse for the lack of pedaling in the sonatas of C. Ph. The real reason for not using the pedal is probably due to the change in style to the early classic. It is the musical qualities that make the organ sonatas of the famous Bach son still popular today. The 6 authentic organ sonatas are presented in a critical new edition, which for the first time takes into account the entire diverse sources.

Sonata (Second Version) A major Wq 65,32
Sonata (First Version) A major Wq 70,1
